Carrollton Volunteer FD recognized for half century of service                   21 April 2016

During the monthly Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors meeting on April 21, 2016, Newport District Supervisor William McCarty presented a Resolution to Congratulate Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department on the occasion of its 50th anniversary for the "provision of high quality fire and rescue services" to the community. Accepting the award were three generations of Carrollton VFD members: Retired Assistant Fire Chief James Acree, his grandson Brendan Acree, a legacy and probationary junior firefighter, and his father Joel Acree who recently stepped down after twenty years as chief of the department to serve as the elected Supervisor for Windsor District. The Resolution recognized the half century of emergency first response service of the department beginning in 1966 with a war surplus 1941 fire engine and other significant achievements such as becoming first fire department in the county to obtain an Emergency Medical Services license in 1994. During the presentation, Joel Acree recalled the line-of-duty sacrifices of two members of the department: Chief Claud Taylor who died during a 1969 structure fire in Eclipse, Nansemond County, and nineteen year old firefighter John Paul “J.P.” Memory who died in 2006 in Franklin while giving a vehicle extrication demonstration. The Resolution was adopted by unanimous vote of the County Board of Supervisors.

Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department volunteers host numerous fundraisers throughout the year. Two BBQ fundraisers are held each year - one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Each month Carrollton VFD volunteers host a Bluegrass concert fundraiser. A Holiday Market fundraiser is held in November and the volunteers sell Christmas Trees as a fundraiser in December. These fundraising events provide excellent fellowship opportunities between the community citizens and those volunteers serving them.
Please consider the efforts being put forth by your community volunteers and make an extra effort to attend and support theses fundraisers.

Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department President Fred Mitchell accepts a donation from Anne Williams representing Keurig Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Tuesday 3 February 2015. Isle of Wight County based GMCR Keurig of Windsor, Virginia, donated a new coffee brewer and 750 individual packets of coffee to the non-profit volunteer fire and rescue department of Carrollton, Virginia.
