On Wednesday, 1 February 2012, Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department answered three almost simultaneous Advance Life Support calls within its' first response district. At 0946 Squad-10 and Chief-10 responded to a local supermarket for an unresponsive patient. First ALS unit arrived on scene within four minutes and transport of the patient to the nearest ER began at 1015. At 1020 Carrollton VFD received a "second call" for an ALS patient in a nearby subdivision and Medic-11, Rescue-10 and Chief-10 responded. While the M-11 ALS crew was preparing this patient for transport, a "third call" was received at 1049 dispatching Carrollton VFD for an "obstetrics" patient at a local medical center. Rescue-10 and Chief-10 cleared from the second call to respond as Medic-11 began patient transport from the second scene. With both Carrollton VFD ambulances committed, Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad was requested to respond "automatic aid" to this third ALS call. R-10 and Chief-10 arrived on scene at 1054 to provide first response ALS care followed within a few minutes by the transport ambulance from IWVRS. Both Carrollton units cleared from this scene at 1106 as patient care was transferred to IWVRS ALS crew. |

Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched 1327 Sunday 20 November 2011 to a reported multiple motor vehicle collision with possible entrapment in the northbound lane of the James River Bridge and also involving a boat on a trailer. Carrollton VFD units Rescue-10, Squad-10 and Quint-10 responded immediately along the northbound span with subsequent responses by Chief-10 and Engine-10 which were later cancelled en route. First arriving unit at 1333 with LT Myreon Pierce assuming incident command reported City of Newport News Fire Department engine, ladder truck and two ambulances also on scene on the southbound span as per JRB emergency response protocol. Nightingale Air Ambulance service was alerted for possible deployment. Carrollton VFD and NNFD medical technicians and firefighter crews stabilized and prepared the patients on the northbound lanes and passed them over the gap between the two bridge spans. Other crews received and loaded the patients into the two NNFD ambulances for ground transport to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the primary trauma facility for the Hampton Roads region. Remaining NNFD units returned to service via Route-17 and the Monitor-Merrimack Bridge Tunnel. Carrollton VFD crews remained on scene for vehicle recovery and HAZMAT operations until 1501 when incident command was relinquished to Virginia State Police. This incident was another example of the close mutual professional cooperation between career and volunteer departments when their jurisdictions intersect and conditions warrant. |

Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched 0134 Monday 31 October 2011 to a reported structure "with fire in the living room" on Mouring Drive off Sugar Hill road in Carrollton. Smithfield Volunteer Fire Dept. was also dispatched "automatic aid" per Isle of Wight County structure fire response protocol. Carrollton VFD units Engine-10, Quint-10, Rescue-10, Tanker-10, Car-10, Squad-10 and Chief-10 responded as well as Smithfield VFD units Engine-53 and Heavy Rescue-50. Chuckatuck VFD was also requested to dispatch a tanker unit for additional water supply. First arriving unit reported working fire conditions with smoke showing from the single story structure and an aggressive fire attack was immediately initiated by the E-10 crew in 35 degree temperatures. E53 crew quickly joined the attack. Carrollton VFD Captain B. Hubbard assumed scene command and directed fire suppression operations. The occupants of the home had already evacuated the building in accordance with advice from Isle of Wight Central Dispatch Office. Electricity to the structure was secured and Dominion Power was requested to respond. The fire was reported under control at 0201 and Chuckatuck Tanker-9 was cleared at 0230. A local American Red Cross representative arrived on scene to provide shelter for the two adult residents of the building. Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched 1227 Wednesday 19 October 2011 to provide Newport News Fire /Rescue mutual aid assistance to a reported two vehicle collision on the southbound span of the James River Bridge. Carrollton VFD units Squad-10, Rescue-10 and Zone-10 responded at 1228. NNFD advised they had four engines, two ambulances and a battalion chief on scene and needed assistance with a second patient extrication and transport because vehicle wreckage blocked their approach to the scene. Carrollton units were advised to approach northbound on the southbound span. R-10 and Z-10 crews assisted with extrication operations and S-10 transported one ALS patient to RRMC ER. HAZMAT mitigation and control operations were conducted and VSP assumed scene and traffic control upon arrival. R-10 was cleared at 1338 and S-10 was available returning from RRMC at 1420. This incident was an excellent example of the close coordination and cooperation between career fire/rescue agencies on the Peninsula and volunteer departments on the south side of the James River. |
