
Stucture Fire on Kathleen Drive in Smithfield Heights
Carrollton and Smithfield Volunteer Fire Departments, Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad (IWVRS) along with Isle of Wight Emergency services were dispatched at 3:16 p.m. Sunday 28 July to a reported structure fire in the 16000 Block of Kathleen Drive in the Smithfield Heights neighborhood. All 4 agencies responded within minutes.
Neighbors reported smoke coming from the roof and attic vents of an unoccupied residence under renovation. Smithfield VFD, Station-50 (SVFD) Engine-51 and IWVRS ambulance M-61 arrived on scene in 7 minutes and the E-51 crew initiated a rapid interior fire attack with a hand line through the “A” side front door. Carrollton VFD, Station-10 (CVFD) Rescue-10 arrived next and the R-10 crew joined with the E-51 crew in the interior fire suppression operation. SVFD CPT Cody Hassell assumed command and CVFD CPT Derek Caldwell was assigned operations. Rushmere Volunteer Fire Dept (RVFD) was requested to dispatch Tanker-30 and CVFD Tanker-10 and SVFD Tanker-50 were also dispatched for additional water supply in this non-hydranted area. SVFD Engine-52 and CVFD Quint-10 arrived and these crews rapidly assisted the on-scene crew in fire suppression. An interior ceiling collapse in the “BC” corner of the structure required a temporary evacuation but crews quickly returned to suppress the remaining fire that was reported under control at 3:41 p.m. All inbound tanker units were then cancelled. IWVRS and Isle of Wight Emergency Services medical crews conducted rehabilitation operations in the 93F degree outside temperature. Community Electric Company and the county building inspector were called in as overhaul operations continued. All apparatus and crews were cleared from the scene by 5:08 p.m. to return to quarters for further availability.
